Frequently asked questions

Urban beekeeping in Montreal is regulated by the Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ), which requires beekeepers to register their hives. The city also has specific guidelines on hive placement to ensure the safety and comfort of residents. Alvéole’s professional beekeepers ensure that all hives comply with Montreal’s local and provincial regulations.

Urban beekeeping is safe, with many successful programs throughout Montreal. At Alvéole, we use Italian honey bees, a breed known for their docility. These bees are gentle and only sting when they feel threatened, which is rare. Since bees die after stinging, they avoid doing so unless absolutely necessary.

Wild bees are also peaceful and nonterritorial. While capable of stinging, they are extremely gentle and focused on their work, making stings highly unlikely unless directly provoked.

Urban beekeeping aligns with Montreal’s sustainability goals by promoting urban biodiversity and offering educational opportunities that help raise awareness about the role of pollinators in the ecosystem. It aligns with Montreal’s broader efforts to increase green spaces, foster environmental stewardship, and create a resilient urban environment.
