Frequently asked questions
Urban beekeeping in Toronto is regulated by the provincial government and hives must be registered. Alvéole’s professional beekeepers handle all compliance with Toronto’s local and provincial regulations, ensuring a smooth and responsible beekeeping program.
Urban beekeeping is safe, with many successful programs running across Toronto. At Alvéole, we work with a special breed of Italian honey bees selected for their docility. Honey bees are gentle creatures who (almost) never sting without reason. Unless they feel threatened, bees have no motivation to sting – in fact, once they sting, they lose their stinger along with a part of their abdomen, and die.
Wild bees are as peaceful as honey bees. Some technically can sting, but it’s rare. Docile and nonterritorial, they’re extremely gentle. Unless they’re being touched, they simply go about their business.
Urban beekeeping supports Toronto’s environmental sustainability goals, as outlined in the city’s TransformTO Climate Action Strategy. Urabn beekeeping programs promote biodiversity and provide educational opportunities that help raise awareness about the importance of urban ecosystems. It aligns with Toronto’s broader sustainability initiatives, contributing to green spaces, environmental stewardship, and a healthier urban environment for both people and wildlife.
