Nestled between mountains and ocean, Vancouver is a paradise for nature lovers and pollinators alike. The city’s dedication to sustainability shines through its green initiatives and thriving biodiversity. In spring, pink and white cherry blossoms burst into bloom, kicking off the foraging season for pollinators. By summer, urban bees buzz around modern skyscrapers and green spaces, seeking out Himalayan blackberry, clover, wild sweet peas, and asters.

Frequently asked questions

Urban beekeeping in Vancouver is regulated by city bylaws and provincial regulations, requiring beekeepers to register their hives with the BC Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. The city also has specific guidelines regarding hive placement to ensure safety and minimize disturbances to neighbors. Alvéole’s professional beekeepers handle all compliance with Vancouver’s local and provincial regulations.

Urban beekeeping is safe, with many successful programs running across Vancouver. At Alvéole, we work with a special breed of Italian honey bees selected for their docility. Honey bees are gentle creatures who (almost) never sting without reason. Unless they feel threatened, bees have no motivation to sting – in fact, once they sting, they lose their stinger along with a part of their abdomen, and die.

Wild bees are as peaceful as honey bees. Some technically can sting, but it’s rare. Docile and nonterritorial, they’re extremely gentle. Unless they’re being touched, they simply go about their business.

Urban beekeeping supports Vancouver’s biodiversity strategy, which aims to foster sustainable urban ecosystems. By promoting pollinator health and providing educational opportunities, urban beekeeping programs align with the city’s efforts to increase environmental stewardship and resilience.
