Known by the locals as the Triple D, Dallas is not only home to the Dallas Cowboys and delicious Tex-Mex cuisine, but to a growing community of bees. The Alvéole bees have been buzzing in Dallas since 2020. They feast on the wild bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush that pepper the city’s gardens, parks, and rooftops. The city’s environmental initiatives, including not just urban beekeeping but urban reforestation and water conservation, showcase a dedication to sustainability.

Tanger Outlets

When Tanger Outlets Fort Worth wanted to connect with their community, they turned to Alvéole to bring honey bees to the shopping center.

Shoppers have had the chance to learn more about bees and biodiversity and even taste some local honey at information kiosks hosted by the beekeeper.

The program also plays a role in tenant engagement, with retailers invited to special workshops like candle making, honey extraction, and even looking inside the hive during beekeeper visits.

Frequently asked questions

Urban beekeeping in Dallas is regulated by local ordinances, which require beekeepers to follow guidelines on hive placement These regulations ensure the safety and well-being of both bees and residents. Professional Alvéole beekeepers ensure compliance with all local regulations and best practices.

Urban beekeeping is safe, with many successful bee programs operating throughout Dallas. At Alvéole, we work with a special breed of Italian honey bees selected for their docility. Honey bees are gentle creatures who (almost) never sting without reason. Unless they feel threatened, bees have no motivation to sting – in fact, once they sting, they lose their stinger along with a part of their abdomen, and die.

Wild bees are as peaceful as honey bees. They technically can sting, but they don’t. Docile and nonterritorial, they’re extremely gentle. Unless they’re being touched, they simply go about their business.

A bee program supports Dallas’s sustainability initiatives, including those outlined in the Dallas Comprehensive Environmental & Climate Action Plan (CECAP). A bee program promotes urban biodiversity and provides educational opportunities about the crucial role of pollinators in maintaining healthy ecosystems. This aligns with Dallas’s broader efforts to foster environmental stewardship and create a more sustainable and resilient city.
