Align with Denver’s green regulations

Denver’s Green Buildings Ordinance is one of many tools the city uses to reduce the environmental impact of new buildings and renovations. This city law requires developers and property owners to adopt sustainable development strategies, including those that aim to increase green space, improve water management, increase the use of solar and other renewable energies, foster the design of more energy-efficient buildings, and increase adoption of national green building programs, such as LEED.

Frequently asked questions

In Denver, urban beekeeping is regulated by local ordinances, which require beekeepers to register their hives with Denver Animal Protection. There are also specific rules regarding hive placement. Alvéole’s professional beekeepers handle all aspects of hive management and ensure compliance with Denver’s regulations.

Urban beekeeping is safe, with many successful bee programs operating throughout Denver. At Alvéole, we work with a special breed of Italian honey bees selected for their docility. Honey bees are gentle creatures who (almost) never sting without reason. Unless they feel threatened, bees have no motivation to sting – in fact, once they sting, they lose their stinger along with a part of their abdomen, and die.

Wild bees are as peaceful as honey bees. They technically can sting, but they don’t. Docile and nonterritorial, they’re extremely gentle. Unless they’re being touched, they simply go about their business.

Urban beekeeping aligns with Denver’s sustainability goals, particularly as outlined in the city’s Climate Action Plan and its focus on increasing green spaces and promoting biodiversity. Alvéole’s urban beekeeping program promotes urban biodiversity and provides educational opportunities to help residents and businesses engage in environmental stewardship. It complements Denver’s broader efforts to create a resilient, sustainable urban environment.
