Minneapolis Convention Center

Sustainability is at the heart of the Minneapolis Convention Center’s mission.

They aim to offer clients an event space that aligns with their values and sustainability goals.

To bring more visibility to their extensive sustainability efforts, they brought a honey bee hive to their lush rooftop pollinator garden. It is now downtown’s largest pollinator refuge.

Through educational events hosted by their beekeeper, the MCC is successfully connecting more people with nature in the city.

Frequently asked questions

Urban beekeeping in Minneapolis is regulated by city ordinances, which require beekeepers to obtain a permit and adhere to specific guidelines regarding hive placement and maintenance to ensure public safety and neighborly harmony. Additionally, beekeepers must register their hives with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. Alvéole’s professional beekeepers ensure compliance with all local and state regulations.

Urban beekeeping is safe, with many successful bee programs operating throughout Minneapolis. At Alvéole, we work with a special breed of Italian honey bees selected for their docility. Honey bees are gentle creatures who (almost) never sting without reason. Unless they feel threatened, bees have no motivation to sting – in fact, once they sting, they lose their stinger along with a part of their abdomen, and die.

Wild bees are as peaceful as honey bees. They technically can sting, but they don’t. Docile and nonterritorial, they’re extremely gentle. Unless they’re being touched, they simply go about their business.

Alvéole’s urban beekeeping program aligns with Minneapolis’s sustainability efforts, including initiatives to enhance green spaces, promote biodiversity, and foster environmental education. By supporting pollinator health and providing educational opportunities, Alvéole’s program contributes to the city’s broader goals of creating a more sustainable urban environment.
