Book a demoPhiladelphia is no stranger to urban bees. The city has been hosting rooftop beehives since 1914. In fact, the most commonly used beehive model in the country was designed by a Philly native. The city’s pollinators feast on a wide variety of white clover, milkweed, and linden trees.

ONE Liberty Place
Since 2021, honey bees have called the Shops at Liberty Place rooftop home.
The property team was inspired to bring on a beekeeping program to increase environmental awareness and engagement within the community.
ONE Liberty Place holds informational and interactive events hosted by their Alvéole beekeeper. Participants have had the chance to swing by a kiosk and ask their burning beekeeping questions, or make their own candles from beeswax.

Frequently asked questions
Urban beekeeping in Philadelphia is regulated by city ordinances, requiring beekeepers to register their hives with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. The city has specific guidelines for hive placement and maintenance to ensure public safety and harmony within neighborhoods. Alvéole’s professional beekeepers ensure full compliance with Philadelphia’s local and state regulations.
Urban beekeeping is safe, with many successful bee programs operating throughout Philadelphia. At Alvéole, we work with a special breed of Italian honey bees selected for their docility. Honey bees are gentle creatures who (almost) never sting without reason. Unless they feel threatened, bees have no motivation to sting – in fact, once they sting, they lose their stinger along with a part of their abdomen, and die.
Wild bees are as peaceful as honey bees. They technically can sting, but they don’t. Docile and nonterritorial, they’re extremely gentle. Unless they’re being touched, they simply go about their business.
Alvéole’s urban beekeeping program aligns with Philadelphia’s sustainability efforts, including initiatives to promote green spaces, biodiversity, and environmental education. Alvéole’s approach to urban beekeeping contributes to Philadelphia’s broader goals of creating a more sustainable urban environment.
