Frequently asked questions
Yes! Alvéole’s beekeeping program is designed with safety as a top priority. Our expert beekeepers handle all hive management, and the bees we work with — honey bees and solitary wild bees — are non-aggressive and focused on pollination. We work with many schools and we have never had an issue.
Our program directly supports STEM, environmental science, and sustainability education. The workshops integrate concepts in biology, ecology, and food systems while fostering skills in observation, critical thinking, and teamwork. Additionally, the program connects with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, helping schools meet sustainability and environmental education objectives.
The program is adaptable for all grade levels, from elementary to high school and post-secondary. Workshops are designed to be age-appropriate, offering hands-on experiences for younger students and deeper discussions on sustainability, biodiversity, and pollination for older students.
We offer a variety of workshops, from presentation-style workshops about the life of a bee, to hands-on workshops like honey-bottling and candle-making. Learn more about our workshops.
The honey harvested from your school’s hive is collected and jarred with custom labels featuring your school’s name or logo. This honey can be used for educational purposes, shared with students and staff, or incorporated into school events and fundraisers.
None! Our beekeepers handle all hive management, including installation, inspections, and honey harvesting. School staff are not responsible for maintenance, though teachers and students are encouraged to participate in educational visits and workshops.
During colder months, honey bees enter a natural overwintering state, clustering inside the hive to stay warm. Our beekeepers ensure they have enough stored honey to survive the season. For wild bee habitats, the solitary bees remain dormant in their cocoons until spring. Even if the bees aren’t active during the winter, students can stay engaged through workshops led by our beekeepers.
